Money Secrets Of The Amish by Lorilee Craker – Personal Finance Book Review – Bartering and Gifting

Difficult economic times inspire people to make wise financial decisions. Whether it’s choosing to repair a car instead of buying a new one, or investing in simple pleasures and luxury outings, such behaviors are proliferating. One culture that has always lived a harsh but meaningful life is the Amish. People are increasingly interested in their lifestyle; And I wonder what aspects of their lives they might feel comfortable emulating.

Lorille Cracker is the author of the new book, Money Secrets to Finding True Abundance in Amish Simplicity, Sharing, and Saving. It explores their lifestyle, which is extravagant with peace, family and community closeness. For them, farming is a muscle they exercise regularly.

Cracker interviewed Amish people in Michigan and Pennsylvania, including an Amish banker whose clients are 95 percent Amish. During the Great Recession of 2008, his bank had its best year yet. Amish experts and English (Amish refer to any non-Amish), financial perspectives also highlight the book. Two of their money-saving habits, bartering and gift-wrapping, are discussed here.

exchange. Bartering was a popular social behavior from the 1880s until the Great Depression. Today it is still normal. The Amish, who have a long history of living outside of a cash economy, love to barter goods for goods, goods for services, or services for services. When it comes to bartering, ask yourself, “What are you good at and what can you negotiate for something of value?”

Unfortunately, Americans can be overly proud of barter, but it is popular in foreign countries. Exchange and you will:

  • Build relationships and community.
  • Engage on a deeper level when you need to express your needs.
  • Think of your assets before your needs.

If the exchange is uncomfortable, start with your friends and acquaintances; and looking for exchange opportunities. Post what you need on social media sites.

Consider giving a gift. The Amish give one gift to each child on birthdays and Christmas. Gifts are often useful, need-based, and handmade, regardless of the recipient’s age. The first step in rethinking gift giving is to cut back. Consider giving gifts that: A. experimental or charitable, or b. Kind of domestic.

experimental gifts. Give the gift of one experience, shared or not, knowledge, skill and most importantly memorable. Examples include tickets to sporting events, museum memberships or horse riding lessons. Experiential gifts can be expensive or inexpensive, as it is more of an investment in the relationship.

  • Unwrapped gifts. They can be fun, economical, but meaningful. Give coupons for services, including babysitting, housekeeping, or yard work.
  • Gift coupon. Think of it as a gift of time that allows you to create memories that are priceless. Coupon gifts are also an expected use.
  • Make a donation in the recipient’s name to a favorite charity.

Domestic. Examples are painted pottery, handmade candles, garden stones, and soap.

  • Cook, you can, bake. “There’s something about the gift of cooking that far exceeds the value of the ingredients,” says Cracker.

Secondary. Aim for 20 percent of your gifts to come from resale, consignment or thrift stores, suggests Craker:

  • Resale shops. May contain children’s jewelry.
  • Merchandise stores. Find brand name clothing, baby shower and newborn gifts.

Buy your own home for gifts. One person’s trash is another’s pleasure.

  • re-gifting. This practice gets a bad rap, but if you have something in good condition that someone else will appreciate more than you, why not give it a go?
  • Practice giving again after the Christmas season. Sometimes gifts have additional meaning for both the giver and receiver. Parents can gift special household items to their grown children. Such objects are precious, an emotional connection indicates their upbringing.

Money secrets of the Amish Shows that bartering and gift-giving can be both hip and practical. And, you don’t need to make a hood or hangers to thrive.
