The potential level of group performance depends largely on the resources that its members individually provide to the group. We want to look at two general resources that have received the most attention: knowledge, skills and abilities; and personality characteristics.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

Part of the group’s performance can be predicted by assessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of its individual members. It is true that we read from time to time of a sports team composed of mediocre players who, due to excellent coaching, determination and precise teamwork, outperformed a much more talented group of players. But such cases are news precisely because they are aberrations. As the old saying goes, “The race is not always to the fastest, nor is the battle to the strongest, but that is the way to bet.” Group performance is not just the summation of the abilities of its individual members. However, these skills set the parameters for what members can do and how effectively they can form within a group.

A review of the evidence shows that interpersonal skills are consistently identified as important to high levels of work group performance. These include conflict management and resolution, collaborative problem solving, and communication. For example, members should be able to identify the type and source of group conflict and implement an appropriate conflict resolution strategy; Identify situations that require participatory group problem solving and use the appropriate quality and type of participation; and listening correctly and using active techniques.

Personality characteristics:

Much research has been done on the relationship between personality traits and group attitudes and behavior. The general conclusion is that attributes that have positive connotations in our culture tend to be positively related to group productivity, morale, and cohesion.
