A Book Review: Hurt 2.0 Inside the World of Today’s Teenager – Baker Academic, 2004 Dr. Chap Clark

Chap Clark has dedicated his life to working with youth and had three teenagers when he began to understand this age group. He thought he was well-prepared, but one of his sons told him that none of them accepted adults. The centerpiece of a group collecting research on the topic, Clark deputized for several months at a California high school that had a diverse demographic and academic background.

As part of Part I – The Changing World of Adolescence, he reports that while at the end of the 20th century people were classified as both children and adults, within 50 years adolescence had become an intermediate stage. Sociologists now talk about early, middle and late adolescence. Throughout Clark’s time with these middle-aged adults, many adults commented on and did not recognize the changes that had occurred. Clarke’s premise is that teenagers are indeed different from adults of the mid-20th century. In addition, he suggests that the transition from child to adult took about three years in the 1950s, but now it takes up to 15 years. Freedoms once reserved for late adolescence are now afforded to middle adolescence. Dr. Clark’s scope is to first understand who these people are, with just a few sentences.

Chap believes that the defining issue is for modern adults abandonment. This research convinced him that there was a much larger gap between youth and adulthood than he and most adults had ever realized. of David Elkind Hasty child Describes how often parents text their children, often in age-inappropriate activities. In separate volume Patricia Hershey reflects on how ’90s teenagers were the most isolated and out-of-control they’ve ever been. As a result of this abandonment, they form their own “family” with their peers. Around the age of fifteen, abstract thinking begins to develop, and adolescents realize that they must find their place in the adult world. If they don’t have a strong bond with a parent or other significant adult, they gravitate toward their peers. Often these ties are stronger than with their family. Finding a balance in their loyalty is a challenge. Instead of trying to be a different self, Clark believes that adults mostly operate in this world “down under.” Chappie argues that teenagers don’t trust adults with their inner lives. Teenagers, Clark says, don’t believe adults genuinely care about them.

In Part 2 – The Landscape of the World Under Clark explores the following areas of adolescent life: peers, school, family, sports, sex, busyness and stress, ethics and morality, parties, games and social networks, and children in the fields. (any limit – vulnerable and privileged). In this last part, the author talks about three aspects of individuation: identity, autonomy and belonging. Identity reflects how we see ourselves; Autonomy includes taking responsibility and making wise decisions; Belonging reminds us that we were created to be part of a group – not isolated. Part 2 takes up half of the book and deserves more space in this review than I can afford. In the section about the school, Chappie reports that cheating is the norm. Also, I would like to say that Clark recognizes the importance of family in the lives of teenagers.

Finally Part 3 – Where do we go from here? Clark offers several suggestions. When there was a shift from a “nurturing” focus to an institutional focus, much was lost. So going back to being more nurturing is one step. As one teacher concluded – he needed to listen more. Adolescents also need stable and secure presence, as well as authentic, intimate relationships with adults. Ultimately, Clark offers five strategies to reverse the process of systemic abandonment:

1. Train those who work with youth to understand today’s adults.

2. Youth workers must work together.

3. Those who work with young people must understand them and provide boundaries.

4. Parents should learn about their teenagers and be encouraged in their parenting.

5. Communities should make sure that teenagers have some significant adults who support them.

Clark is currently involved with an organization – http://www.Parenteen.org – that is active in developing Clark’s suggestions in this and his other books.

As I continue to research this topic, I have the following concerns:

1. Although the scope of the book given by Clark observes the teenager today and begins to talk about what to do about it, I wonder if there should be more discussion of the causes in order to contribute to the solution.

2. Although Clark includes the family and the church, in this book they seem to be relatively minor participants in the decisions presented.
