Stress Management for Students

“Mom, I’m too sick to go to school today.” We fake being sick to avoid school, but being sick isn’t always fake. The stresses students face on a daily basis can be just as damaging as the stresses their parents face. However, managing stress for students is not as easily accessible as managing stress for adults.

Charts that claim to show “who is affected by stress” list occupations. On a scale of 1 to 10, police officers rate it a 7.7 and teachers a 6.2 — but students don’t. “Student” is not considered a profession. Online searchers type in a phrase like “teacher job + stress reduction” and get a fair amount of answers. Type in “stress management for students” and the answer is much less.

Are you too sick to go to school?

Stressors can and do make students sick. Stressors trigger the “fight or flight” response and the body immediately prepares. It pumps out an extra supply of adrenaline for short-term survival. It temporarily stops functions such as bowel movements. It directs blood to the muscles. It dilates the pupil of the eye to detect slight movements. The heart accelerates the supply of oxygen to the muscles. All this and more happens in seconds, so we can fight or “run like crazy”.

If the body prepares and the student sits quietly, the body should cancel its preparations. Without the ability to manage stress, he can get sick.

Are you sick enough to excel at school?

Most students find that eustress (good stress) is a positive helper in school. Of course, too much stress causes some students to freeze up during exams, but the right amount of eustress can best suit students.

Although stress management for students should be tailored to specific stressors, some of them actually are—or can be—eustress stressors.

Consider the following seven (7) stressors.

1. Academics: Academic pressure can be distressing if allowed to become so. However, through stress management, it can be eustress that encourages greater achievement. In this case, managing stress for students requires academic success. Peeking can lead to greater academic success.

2. Dating: Student life involves a frequent focus on dating, so stress management for students requires both the eustress and distress of the dating game.

3. Environment: The school environment can be distressing if students are to deal with it on their own. Planned activities aimed at initial adaptation, and occasional periods of relaxation, can go a long way in managing your stress for students of Eustress.

4. Extracurricular: Many students naturally seek out extracurricular activities and find them a source of stress. Others feel pressured to engage in them and experience misery in return. Managing stress for students requires careful selection of activities and balancing these activities with school life, family life, and part-time jobs.

5. Peers: Peer pressure can be a source of stress or distress, depending on how prepared students are for it. Students who want to manage stress want to establish strong beliefs and stick to them.

6. Time Management: Managing stress for students should involve planning, as a lack in this area can affect most or all other areas of a student’s life. Easier for some than others, getting into the habit of keeping a daily planner and sticking to it can keep you out of trouble.

7. Parents: Unfortunately, parents themselves are to blame for some of the student stress. It is known that as students grow older, they seek greater independence from their parents. This is necessary if they are to become mature. At the same time, fighting can cause great distress on both sides of the equation. If you want to succeed in your stress management efforts for students, you will need to focus on the stress of the parent/student relationship.

Students can do a lot to manage their stress simply by eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep. They can supplement this by keeping a schedule, including regular waking and sleeping hours.

Best first aid?

Exercise is probably one of the best ways to manage stress for students. It is also simple. When feeling completely helpless, exercise is like a helping hand. When students want to be close to someone or something, the exercise channels those feelings into appropriate channels. When students feel like their brains have stopped working, exercise can re-engage the engines.

These 2 simple exercises provide first aid for students to manage stress.

1. Get up, walk quickly to the washroom and splash cold water on your face. Spray it six to seven times and close your eyes.

2. Leave the seat and walk for five minutes. As you walk, consciously relax your muscles and breathe in and out deeply—as deeply as you can without straining.

Long-term stress management for students should include a regular, daily exercise regimen. Exercise releases emotions such as frustration and anger. Exercise also reduces stress-induced adrenaline and produces endorphins, which elevate eustress.

If you are a student, or have to manage stress for students, make regular exercise a priority.
